Client Survey and 2009 in Review
This fall, we performed a global client survey and received an excellent response across all of our user industries. As expected, pharma and biotech comprised the highest proportion of responders – nearly two-thirds!

And what did we learn? That company pipeline data is the information used most frequently, with nearly 60% using this data at least weekly. We also had some great feedback on enhancing features and the functionality of the database, which will help drive the MedTRACK V2 project.

If your account manager hasn't already told you, we are working on a new version of MedTRACK with expanded content sets and geographic coverage and, most importantly, a much easier to use and intuitive interface. It will be the first major update to the look and feel of our site, as well as a HUGE added value. Very exciting indeed!

However, just because we are working on V2 doesn't mean we aren’t continuing to develop and expand MedTRACK. In the last few months of 2009, we launched global financials, enhanced product name search, and integrated data from MedTRACK Japan.

And, we kicked off 2010 by implementing the following enhancements:
    Chemical Structure Search
    Sales Screener
    Additional CIQ Functionality
    Firm Type Filters
    Expanded Management Contacts

MedTRACK in the Press – Deals Analysis & Trending Top

As featured recently in SCRIP 100, MedTRACK data shows 2009 proved to be an interesting year in terms of deal trends. As expected, oncology continued to lead the number of deals by therapeutic category (23%), followed by infections (17%) and CNS (13%), maintaining the same trend as in the previous 5 years. However, the increased growth in number of deals done in smaller, niche markets such as kidney/genitourinary, musculoskeletal, ophthalmology/optometry and women’s health was indicative of a shift in focus to emerging markets. Products/technologies in these four areas accounted for 11.5% of all deals in 2009, up from 9.6% in 2006. Although these areas represent a smaller market size, they may offer more attractive pricing and margins – key factors in the current state of the global economy.

    As of Q3 2009

The increasing trend in proportion of small-molecule focused deals compared to deals involving biologics continued to rise in 2009, close to 74% of all product deals. This is clear evidence that deal makers are focusing on products that can target emerging markets, such as India and China, as well as expanding portfolios and generic coverage.

    As of Q3 2009

Globally, there was a 15% increase in the number of early-stage deals (products at the research and preclinical phases) in 2009 versus 2008, accounting for the majority of product deals. This trend reflects the fact that Pharma and Biotech companies are looking to expand the depth of their pipelines further down the road by taking advantage of products at bargain basement prices.
